Google: A New Mama's Best Friend
Before my baby was born, I was certain that my birth would look a certain way—at home, in a birthing pool, without drugs or medical interventions. It ended up being the exact opposite from what I’d envisioned.
Before my baby was born, I was certain what my smartphone/internet experience would look like post-partum—limited online connection. I planned on turning off my phone for a few weeks after the baby was born so I could truly focus on the task of being a mother.
Fast-forward to the baby’s birth—five weeks earlier than expected. Instead of the limited smartphone contact that I’d envisioned for my postpartum life, I’ve become a late-night Googler, an avid student of YouTube University—on top of my solid WhatsApping habit.
A small sample of my late-night Google searches: Why won’t my baby sleep at night? How do I get my newborn to latch without hurting me? Until what age should you swaddle a baby? Should I keep my baby’s umbilical cord stump? How do I use a faja? Circumcision? Why do you need a humidifier for a baby? What color should my baby’s poop be? Is my baby pooping enough? How do I know if my baby is constipated? How to heal nipple blister? Why do newborns have to do tummy time?
When it comes to the intricacies of breastfeeding, swaddling, belly binding, car seat installing, cloth diapering, etc.—YouTube University to the rescue!
As it turns out, much to my surprise, my smartphone has become my trusty confidante as I navigate this strange new world of motherhood.
Don’t get me wrong—I turn to my friends who are mamas frequently, too. The Google and the YouTube are not replacements for the wisdom of real people that I know and love. But somehow, I just can’t get enough advice when it comes to all things poop- and nipple-related—especially in the middle of the night when I’m going on hour three of the breastfeeding frenzy that is my life now. Just like me, Google never sleeps!
Tip of the Week
Given my current level of sleep deprivation, I can’t promise that I’ll keep this newsletter going on a weekly basis--but I will try to maintain it at least bi-weekly.
If you or anyone you know has an interesting relationship with smartphones/the world wide web, please reach out. I’m looking for people to interview!
If you enjoy this newsletter, please
