What Does Your Body Think About Your Smartphone Addiction?
Hello friends, I write to you from the land of little sleep, unlimited dirty laundry, and diaper changes by moonlight. I have made it my goal to continue writing this newsletter once a week, although I’m not as timely as I used to be. Forgive me.
For the last two months, I have spent countless waking (and non-waking) hours breastfeeding my baby. Beside my nursing chair is a mountain of books, but I’ve slowly started trading reading for scrolling. I like reading! So why has it become easier to reach for my phone and get my scroll on? It’s not brain surgery. That’s what these apps are meant to do: hook us.
Although my brain didn’t have the willpower to disconnect, my body was smarter and started giving me serious signals that all this scrolling was doing me harm. Several nights last week, I had to take an Ibuprofen before going to sleep because my forehead pulsed with a headache and my eyes hurt from too much screen time. On Friday, I took my first yoga class in several months and my body screamed—enough of all that shoulder scrunching and head dropping! I ended up taking the hint and deactivating my Instagram account, the biggest culprit of my recent scrolling binges.
Listen to your body, y’all! I’m talking to those of you watching entire movies on your tiny cell phones! And read up about “text neck.” Not cute.
